We would suggest you start planning the men’s outfits at least six months before the day. Collect together brochures and magazines to give you ideas, but try not to narrow it down too much. Some things may not be available, or may not suit you when you try them on!

Be prepared to try outfits on, wearing appropriate footwear is a start, no white socks or trainers! Bring sample swatches of bridesmaid and bride’s dresses to enable you to match or tone with the general colour scheme.

Bring a second opinion with you, be it best man or fiancé. If you bring a large group, be prepared for large-scale discussion, and decisions being taken out of your hands.

Think about jacket style, and how it will suit all members of the party, consider an alternative style for the bridegroom, or maybe a different waistcoat and cravat combination.

Consider the extended range of (tie as a tie) silk scrunch ties, to give a more contemporary feel.

Try and visit a few bridal fayres to get a feel for what is available. Do not expect to try outfits on. You will not be wearing the appropriate clothes to get the full effect, call into the shops and do it properly!

Don’t be pressurised into making a booking that day, go home and think about if you need to. You should have plenty of time before the date to make the right decision. You only do this once!

Try not to have pre-conceived ideas, and don’t be afraid to try something a little unusual. See the full effect on you, before you write it off. You never know – you might even like it!

 Don’t turn up unannounced. Most menswear shops run an appointment service, so it would be a good idea to ring first to avoid lengthy wait.
